x mask

Made for a TAFE course on prop making.

Covering a hockey mask in thermoplastic (sheet plastic than can be reformed under heat) achieved the perfect shape to work on. After the eyeholes were carved out it was covered in sculpey (malleable plastic that solidifies with heat) and sculpted to a similar thickness all over. Then sculpting tools were used to cut the grille on the mouth, and to shape the areas around the eyes, nicks were added around the edges and any inset level was given a rough/scaly texture. After the mask was hardened it was painted, insets were brushed while the outer layer was stippled in order to give it a more unique texture. Finally, it was covered in a black wash, with a second brown wash applied to the insets in order to give it the effect of dripping.
